Our community voted down a non-recurring operational referendum in April 2017. Here's what that means for changes to our district in the 17-18 school year:

1. Elementary Schools are restructured into Partner Schools
2. Course offerings will be reduced at the Middle & High School
3. Fees for facility reservation and athletic and co-curricular fees will be increased
4. Changes 1 & 2 will result in a reduction of instructional, custodial and support staff.

We're sure you probably have a lot of questions around what these changes will mean at your school.
Please check out the FAQ below.

How will these changes impact class sizes?

These changes will increase class sizes at all levels.
Check out our fact sheet on current vs. proposed class sizes here.

What does the elementary restructuring look like?

Valley View: 3rd-5th grades
Shady Lane: 4K-2nd grades

Riverside: 3rd-5th grades
Ben Franklin: 4K-2nd grades

How will bussing change for my child?

Johnson Bus is planning bus routes now to provide early information to families on how bussing may change. Three options were examined by the district, one option is being recommended and routes are being tested over the next two weeks. This option would:

Leave the start and end times for elementary school day and current bus routes essentially the same. Schools are looking at possibly adjusting the drop off window.

All buses will run their neighborhood routes, stop at school 1, and then continue with students to school 2. In the afternoon, they will start at school 1, continue to school 2, then run the neighborhood routes. Siblings will be riding the same bus together.
Johnson Bus is working closely with the school district and principals to review pickup and
drop-off procedures at school to maximize efficiency and reduce transit time.

State law is 2 miles for transportation for the 2017-18 school year we will continue to bus at 1 mile for elementary students.

These changes should not impact busing for middle or high school students.

An update from Johnson Bus is targeted for May 12th.

Will non-mandated busing still be available?

Yes. As space allows. Parents can receive busing for their child if they do not fit the requirements for standard busing. This comes at an additional out-of-pocket fee from the parent. Please contact district office to set up non-mandated busing.

When are the classroom switches happening?

Moving classrooms will be conducted in two phases.

Phase 1: Movers will be at Shady Lane and Valley View beginning the week of June 12th.  We are estimating the move to take about 3 days. Construction will begin Monday, June 19th.

Phase 2: Movers will be at Riverside and Ben Franklin Elementary after summer school ends, the week of July 31st.

When will I find out which teacher my elementary child has?

Grade level teams will be shared with parents before the end of the current school year.

Parents will be given teacher assignments in paperwork sent to families during the summer prior to the back to school fairs; this is similar to years past.

Are start times changing?

Start times will not change for middle and high school students.

We anticipate start times will not change for elementary schools, but drop off times may change. This decision will not be made until busing is finalized toward the end of May.

Are the PTOs at the elementary schools impacted by these changes?

Yes, however, changes to the PTOs are left up to those organizations to decide.

As of May 2017, Valley View & Shady Lane PTOs have decided to merge but have co-presidents at each building. Riverside & Ben Franklin have decided to coordinate events & meetings together but will have separate leadership teams.

What are the changes to the Athletic fee structure?

On May 22 the school board approved these fees for athletics:

High School Athletic Fees: $165
Middle School Athletic Fees: $130

Financial Assistance is available for students that cannot afford athletic fees. Questions regarding this assistance can be directed to Athletic Director Ryan Anderson.

Does this change open enrollment?

No. Families with children that are already open enrolled into the district will remain the the district. There is still no new open enrollment for the 17-18 school year, not even for siblings of students already open enrolled into the district. Open enrollment is approved on a year-to-year basis, so we can only address the coming school year.
